Walk

Plan Your Walk

Which places are within a mile of your home or work? A mile walk takes 15-20 minutes which can be a pleasant way to get outside and get a little exercise. It's also a good way to get to know your neighborhood and neighbors. Allowing some extra time may allow you to enjoy the walk. Looking up occasionally, you may be able to spot the sun, sky, clouds and trees amidst the concrete, asfault and cars.

Safety

Don't take your eyes of the path too long though because motorists aren't used to looking out for pedestrians in OC. Be sure to look over your shoulder and listen for cars when you cross driveways (especially in commercial areas). At intersections, watch out for turning vehicles. That sometimes means looking over your shoulder. Keep an eye on cars that could be crossing your path.

Laws

Be sure to obey traffic signals. The Vehicle Code allows pedestrians to cross at all intersections regardless of whether it is controlled or a crosswalk is marked.

Tips

Most OC signals have the "Ped Recycle" feature enabled. This means you will get an immediate walk signal if there are no cars or peds waiting to cross your path.
